Join our team! An industry leader since 1912, Lavelle Industries has a unique opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Burlington, WI R&D team. The primary role of this position is to be the product champion of all existing product models. In this position, the candidate will learn, maintain, and improve established product lines. This will require a mix of hands-on testing, CAD modelling, calculations, and studies.

Responsibilities: 

In this position, the candidate will:

  • Learn all existing products and perform engineering calculations to derive design intent.
  • Manage the day-to-day activities of part evaluation and qualification. 
  • Update drawings, models, and assemblies using SolidWorks CAD software.
  • Perform ECRs to update the product as changes arise.
  • Conduct product verification, competitive testing of products, and associated data.
  • Review parts against prints utilizing knowledge of CTQs (Criticals to Quality), standard dimensional tolerances, GD&T, and performance requirements.
  • Troubleshot and find the root cause of products that do not comply with requirements.
  • Communicate cross-functionally with other departments, including sales and operations personnel.
  • Utilize or design test equipment/gauges to provide product verification, validate product requirements, and conduct competitive testing.

Will Learn to:

  • Interface with customers to ensure product/component performance to customer specifications and to appropriate standards.
  • Lead DOE (Design of Experiments)
  • Plastic injection molding 
  • Injection molding press specifications and sizing
  • Injection process settings and effects for multiple materials
  • Injection molding defects and their causes 
  • Plastic material properties and how they affect product performance
  • Rubber compression and injection molding
  • Rheology testing and how the data impacts molding
  • Rubber material properties and how they affect product performance
  • Dynamic structural analysis (mold analysis, Finite Element Analysis, component/material selections).

Requirements:

The successful candidate will have a blend of experience for this position:

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in (Mechanical, Plastics) Engineering
  • 0-2 years of engineering experience.
  • Excellent command of physics, statics, fluid dynamics, and strength of materials 
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and push hard to meet deadlines.
  • Be able to share examples of their impact on design projects.
  • Must be fluent with 3-D CAD, preferably in SolidWorks
